I leave India with mixed feelings

I leave India with very mixed feelings. On the one hand it has the beautiful buildings, temples and gardens, mixed with the vastly different cultures that is a real life experience making me very glad I came. But I can’t help but feel all of this is overshadowed with the horrific poverty, garbage, dog eat dog mentality and total lack of respect for anyone bar themselves. I have never felt welcome [...]

Tickled Pink

With the hotel undergoing construction and not really wanting to eat our breakfast in the rooms we ventured back to the hotel were we had dinner last night. Four slices of toast with butter and jam for 55p and a Nutella crêpes for 90p it was a bit of a bargain. The crepe came out a little cold so if we came here tomorrow we would be sure to ask or it to be served on hot plates. Everyone had run ou [...]

Exploring Agra Fort

Big news! Chocolate pancakes were on the menu for breakfast this morning. Also to our amazement, breakfast was served within 10 minutes and it was actually warm. Unbelievable. It must be a one off. We leave Agra today after spending just one night but before we’re picked up by taxi we wanted to fit in Agra Fort. This fort is said to be the most impressive in all of India and it dates way back to t [...]

Ticking Another Wonder of the World

Waking up with some excitement, and not because we was having McDonalds breakfast for the 3rd day in a row but because today was the day we would tick off another 7th wonder of the modern world, the Taj Mahal. We opted to take a private car to Agra costing £50 and stay in a very highly rated hostel called Zostel. The four hour journey flew by and we was soon unpacking at the hostel ready to ventur [...]

Tomb raiders

It’s our second and last day in Delhi today so we were up bright and early to try and fit in as much as possible. First up was a trip to the Humayun’s Tomb which was built in 1569. As with yesterday Nick and I got stung for the tourist entry prices whilst my Dad waltzed in for just a few pence thanks to his lifetime visa. The tombs grounds were quite spectacular, they cover 30 acres and are made u [...]

Delhi’s finest

Brrr Delhi is cold! It was 6 degrees this morning when we braved it out onto our hotels rooftop for breakfast. Fortunately the food wasn’t actually served outside but the 10 second walk out there was enough of a reminder that we really don’t have enough warm clothes packed. We haven’t been this cold since July when temperatures reached freezing overnight in Banff National Park. I won’t describe br [...]

India’s Slums, What Are They Really Like?

My visit to Dharavi slums today is one that I’ll never forget; it will go down as one of the most memorable, shocking and valuable experiences of my travels so far. Gaining an insight into how people live in these slums was fascinating, it was a real eye opener and left me questioning many things as well as appreciating how lucky we really are. What are Dharavi slums? Before I delve into my experi [...]
